WE HAVE UPDATED OUR BUILDING

The building

Our building at the Castle Street roundabout in Reading

It has been in use for more than 40 years as a place of Christian worship and as a centre for service to the community

Continuing to serve the people of Reading

For 132 years The Salvation Army has been a force for good in and around Reading, Our central Reading building has been by the Castle Street roundabout for more than 40 years. In addition to being a centre for Christian worship it has been the focus for extensive community service. Each year many hundreds of people benefit from the present community programme organised from this building. This is work that we want to continue and to expand. To make this possible we need to carry out urgent repairs to the building and carry out work to bring it up to current health and safety standards. We also want to make the building more welcoming to the hundreds of people that use it each week.

Currently what we offer our community includes: -

  • Providing 1,000 Christmas hampers delivered to families in Reading
  • Assisting and supporting thousands of young people at the Reading Festival over the past 40 years
  • Offering a weekly mothers and toddlers group
  • Providing a weekly lunch club for the elderly and lonely
  • Running a weekly youth club

  • With our newly equipped premises we hope to be able to support the community additionally through providing: -

  • A purpose designed and much needed affordable concert hall for use by community of Reading
  • A professionally run child care facility providing working parents with affordable nursery provision
  • Lunches for homeless and vulnerable people
  • Classes for adults with learning disabilities and for those whose first language is not English.
  • Free advice for vulnerable families in Reading

  • The current estimate for this essential work is £930,000. Our church members have given generously towards this total; special fund raising events have raised more. Donations from the public and legacies have also helped. However we still need to raise another £42,000 to reach that total.

If you can help in any way it would be appreciated and you would be helping us to continue to serve the people of Reading.
